Streetwear thrives on originality and craftsmanship. When Reign approached us to recreate one of their signature hoodies, the challenge was clear: deliver a design that stays true to the original but elevates it with fresh techniques and premium materials. This project pushed the boundaries of fabric treatment, embroidery, and finishing processes to create a hoodie that stands out in the crowded streetwear market.

Choosing the Right Fabric Weight and Sourcing
The foundation of any great hoodie is the fabric. For Reign’s remake, we selected a 400 gsm fabric. Our sourcing expertise was crucial here. We carefully chose both the main fabric and the materials for the lettering embroidery to ensure they could withstand multiple dye processes and the unique stitch removal technique.
The Custom Potassium Dye Process
Potassium dyeing is a specialized technique that adds depth and variation to the fabric’s color. Unlike standard dyeing, this process involves multiple stages of applying and fixing the dye, which creates a rich, layered effect. For Reign’s hoodie, this method gave the fabric a unique, lived-in look that enhances the streetwear aesthetic.
Innovative Fabric Lettering Embroidery
One of the most striking features of this hoodie is the fabric lettering embroidery. This technique involves stitching letters onto the fabric, then removing two specific letters after the dye process. The removal creates a spongy, textured effect that adds depth and a tactile quality to the design.
This embroidery style is a new trend in streetwear, offering a fresh way to play with texture and dimension. The process is intricate: stitches must be placed precisely, and the removal of letters requires careful cleaning and steaming to avoid damaging the surrounding fabric. The result is a bold, eye-catching detail that sets the hoodie apart.
Custom Distressing and Softening
To complete the look, we applied custom distressing throughout the hoodie. This step adds character and a worn-in feel that resonates with streetwear enthusiasts. The distressing was done carefully to avoid compromising the fabric’s strength, focusing on subtle abrasions and fraying in key areas.
The combination of multiple dye baths, stitch removal, steaming, and cleaning makes this hoodie a complex piece to produce. Each step affects the next, so timing and precision are critical.
What Our Community Can Learn from This Project
This hoodie remake offers several lessons for streetwear designers and enthusiasts:
Fabric weight matters
Sourcing expertise is key
Innovative embroidery techniques add value but take time
Multiple dye and finishing steps require precision
Custom distressing enhances authenticity but is also a separate technique
By understanding these elements, our community can better appreciate the craftsmanship behind custom streetwear and apply similar principles to their own projects.
