Behind the Build: Creating a Premium Scrubs Line with Valmasi by Dr. Vanessa

When Dr. Vanessa set out to create Valmasi, the vision was clear. She wanted scrubs that reflect the same level of excellence, confidence, and presence that medical professionals bring into their work every day. This was not about basic uniforms. It was about redefining how scrubs look, feel, and perform, especially for women with curves who want both function and sophistication.

To bring that vision to life, Dr. Vanessa chose a graphene-infused polyester fabric. This is a specialty material known for durability, temperature regulation, and antimicrobial benefits.

That decision immediately positioned Valmasi as a premium product in the market.

What It Actually Took to Build This Line

Developing a scrubs line at this level goes far beyond choosing a fabric and producing a set.

In this case, Dr. Vanessa came to us with her own patterns already developed. This can be a great starting point for designers who have a clear vision and want to take ownership of their product development. At the same time, it introduces an important part of the process that many first-time designers may not anticipate. Patterns often need to be refined for production.

Even when a pattern is well-designed, adjustments are typically required to align with manufacturing standards, grading, fabric behavior, and long-term wear. Our team worked through multiple revisions to ensure the patterns translated properly into a finished product that met both performance and quality expectations.

Alongside pattern refinement, fit development was also a major focus. Because the brand is designed specifically for curvy women, multiple revisions were necessary to ensure the garments were completed according to spec and that seam lines remain clean and flat.

Its important to know if you are cutting the fabric correctly or you could risk this twisting effect that happens when the fabric is cut on the wrong grain line.

The Reality of Premium Fabric Choices

Choosing graphene fabric is an investment. It elevates the product, improves performance, and creates a strong brand position. At the same time, it increases development costs, raises production pricing, and naturally limits the audience to customers who can afford a premium option.

For some brands, that is exactly the goal.

For others, it may not be the right starting point.

How to Create a Scrubs Line More Affordably

For many nurses and doctors entering this space, the priority is creating something functional, stylish, and accessible.

You do not need specialty fabric or pre-developed patterns to get started the right way.

Start with the right base fabric. Polyester and spandex blends or cotton and polyester blends can still offer stretch, durability, and easy care without the higher cost of advanced materials.

If you are bringing your own patterns, make sure they are production-ready. This means they should be properly graded, tested for movement, and aligned with the fabric you plan to use. If not, expect additional development time to refine them.

Focus heavily on fit. A well-fitting scrub set will always stand out more than an expensive fabric with poor construction. Pay attention to proportions, movement, and how the garment sits on different body types.

Keep functionality simple but intentional. Deep pockets, strong stitching, and breathable construction go a long way in creating a reliable uniform.

Design is where you can create your edge. Color choices, clean branding, and thoughtful details can elevate the entire look without significantly increasing your production cost.

Be strategic with your launch. You do not need a full collection. Starting with one or two strong sets in a few colorways allows you to test your market and build demand before expanding.

Valmasi is a strong example of what it looks like to build at the top of the market. The decisions were intentional, from fabric selection to fit to overall positioning.

At the same time, there is space in this industry for both premium and affordable products.

What matters most is alignment. Your product should match your audience, your pricing strategy, and your long-term vision.

From the Factory Floor

At ALYYO, we work with clients at every stage. Some come in with fully developed patterns. Others are starting from an idea. In both cases, our role is to refine, guide, and ensure the final product is built to perform. The goal is always the same. Build a product that works, sells, and represents your vision the right way from the start.
